The 3%degrees Heat Index Rise: Why We Must Act Now to Save Our Ocean for Our Children

A Silent Warning from Our Planet

Our planet is sending us a clear message — and it’s getting harder to ignore.

The average temperature of the Earth’s surface is now between 1.34°C and 1.41°C warmer than it was in the late 1800s — before the industrial revolution — and warmer than at any time in the last 100,000 years. The last decade (2015–2024) was the warmest on record, and each of the last four decades has been hotter than any previous decade since 1850.

In a series of United Nations reports, thousands of scientists and government reviewers agreed that limiting global temperature rise to no more than 1.5°C would help humanity avoid the worst climate impacts and maintain a liveable climate.

However, current global policies point to up to 3.1°C of warming by the end of this century — a level that would lead to irreversible damage to our ecosystems, catastrophic sea-level rise, and widespread loss of biodiversity. Every fraction of a degree matters — for ecosystems, for communities, and for our children’s future.

For millions of ordinary citizens, this rising heat means unbearable weather, higher electricity bills, disrupted fishing seasons, and shrinking freshwater sources. Across our coastal communities, it fuels stronger storms and damages marine life that sustains us all.

At Earthshore, we believe this is not only an environmental issue — it’s a human one. Through the Global Earthshore Movement, we’re uniting people around the world to save our ocean for our children.

What the Rising Heat Means for Us

As global temperatures rise, the effects ripple across every part of life:

  • 🌾 Farmers face longer droughts and unpredictable rainfall.
  • 🐟 Fishermen encounter fewer fish as warmer waters damage coral reefs.
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Families struggle with heat-related illnesses and higher living costs.

This is not just a statistic — it’s a daily reality for millions. The warming planet threatens livelihoods, food security, and the very ecosystems that keep us alive.

Why the Ocean Matters More Than Ever

Our ocean acts as the planet’s life support, regulating most of the Earth’s heat and producing over half of our oxygen. But as global temperatures climb, the ocean is absorbing that excess heat — leading to coral bleaching, marine die-offs, and rising sea levels.

When our ocean suffers, we all suffer.
That’s why Earthshore continues to lead cleanup initiatives, youth education programs, and coastal protection projects through the Global Earthshore Movement.

Every cleanup, every volunteer effort, and every shared story helps save our ocean for our children.

The Impact on Ordinary Citizens

The climate crisis isn’t abstract — it’s personal. The rising global temperature affects everything from food prices to public health.

When ocean temperatures rise, fish migrate or die off, affecting livelihoods. When heatwaves intensify, energy costs soar. When sea levels rise, coastal families lose their homes.

This is why Earthshore calls on every citizen to take part in the Global Earthshore Movement — because every action counts.

Together, we can adapt, reduce emissions, and save our ocean for our children.
